CHORAL COMPOSITION: Father, into thy hands
Title: Father, Into Thy Hands
Composer: Salvatore Ferrantelli (b. 1940)
Date of Composition: 2003
Vocal solos: none
Orchestra Requirements: a cappella (optional colla parte stringa)
Tempo: adagio
Dedication: With gratitude to I Cantori di Carmel
Premier: May 3, 2003 by I Cantori di Carmel, Carmel Mission Basilica, Carmel, California, Dr. Sal Ferrantelli, conductor.
Vocal ranges: S1: c1-g2; S2: b-g2; A: a-a flat 1; T: c1-e; B1: F-a flat; B2: F-a flat
Dynamic Range: ppp-f
Composer's Comments: The constantly shifting chromatic colors and the initial halting phrases are intended as a musical expression of the suffering of Jesus under the pain of crucifixion. At the motet’s central section, the voices shift chromatically upward, one section at a time, until all arrive at a single unison evoking the image of the ascent of Christ’s spirit and its arrival to perfect unity with God. The music then proceeds chromatically downward in somber colors, finally arriving at the point at which the motet began.
