Composer’s Comments for O Vos Omnes: It was intended that the melodies and chromatic harmonic colors in O Vos Omnes should capture the sorrow and anguish as expressed in the words of Jeremiah the prophet. In mourning over Jerusalem, in captivity and in ruins, he said: “All ye that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.” The “O Vos Omnes” text is found in the liturgy for Holy Saturday on the eve of the resurrection.
