"I joined Sal's noon choir in the fall of 2013. My experience in choirs had been practically nil. He started with the one bold request that we should never bring outside problems into choir. Leave them at the door please! Singing should come from joy.
I thought, how could this be? What's a good problem for if you can't ruminate about it hourly? Don't worry, be happy?
Looking back I realize that singing from the source of untroubled joy is indeed possible and even inevitable. What's the secret? First, the zenith of high noon captivates the choir to hold nothing back. I cannot now imagine practicing at another time. Second, Sal follows his own rule. Like the rest of us, he has plenty to dismay but daily decides to bring a grin and fun with him into class. And of course, there's Sal's ability to make the classics come alive body and soul, what a gift!"
